NYU’s Hassenfeld Center:
The Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders was created in 1990 as a comprehensive outpatient facility for children from birth to young adulthood. Under the leadership of medical director Linda Granowetter, MD, the Hassenfeld Center offers the latest cutting edge treatments and clinical trials, specializing in neuro-oncology, leukemia, lymphoma, sarcomas, hemophilia, and neurofibromatosis. As a leading member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the Hassenfeld Center is among the top centers in the nation in clinical research.
Type of Care
The Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders believes that the emotional and psychological impact of helping to normalize the lives of children and their families during treatment will have a lasting, positive effect both in fighting disease and long after an illness is cured.
The Hassenfeld Center’s dedicated staff includes doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers, and child life therapists who work together to provide high-quality care in a child-and-family-friendly environment, replete with colorful murals, a well-stocked playroom, and quiet spaces for conversation and reflection. The off-site location, close to the Medical Center campus, allows children to undergo treatment in their own “safe” environment, away from the intimidating hospital atmosphere.
